Edinburgh

We've had two full days in Edinburgh - just enough time to refresh our memories of the highlights of the city: Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the Royal Mile, the Old Town & the New Town, and the National Gallery of Art.  The weather pretty much cooperated - overcast and cool enough for pleasant walking.

We have a nice little hotel at the upper end of the New Town, at the base of Calton Hill, which makes for a quiet stay and the hike to the top provides a great 360 degree view of the whole city.  We've wandered around, found a pool for me to swim in (and which mom almost got arrested for taking photos in!  No child pornography!!), had very nice meals and excellent sleeps to get over our jet lag.

Tomorrow we've a long day of sightseeing and driving planned enroute to Ballachulish, which will be our base for our week's hiking holiday in  the Scottish Highlands with HF Holidays.  We've got our fingers and toes crossed in hopes the rain stays away!

  1. Good luck in Scotland! You may not have the time but if you can get to the Uists you will love it. These are the Western Isles, a Gaelic speaking part of the country.

Round Glencoe is nice if you don't have rain. Check out the Clachaig inn in Glencoe as a climbers/walkers pub. If you want a ridge walk, go to the Mamore ridge, near Fort William.,There is also the Aonach Eagach ridge above Glencoe, but parts are rather exposed - not for your mum!

For 25 years this was all my weekend area and beyond, for walking etc.

    1. I wish I had talked to you before I booked our holiday! Sounds like great advice but we ended up on a booked hiking trip and so just went where they led us! We had a great time, despite the rain...
