Day 14: To The Lighthouse

Another superb day for the weather. 2 straight weeks of sunshine, how lucky are we? As the forecast promised to be nearly as nice tomorrow as today, we decided to postpone our Snowden hike till Thursday and hop over to Angelsey for the day.

First stop on Allison's list was the picturesque castle of Beaumaris, just over the bridge from mainland Wales. Started in 1295, it was the last of Edward  I's series of defensive castles, but the money ran out and it remains unfinished. It has a spectacular setting just by the sea, and an actual water-filled moat, and was perfectly enjoyable from afar.

We drove out some country lanes to the east of that particular peninsula, then back to the highway to shoot north towards Holyhead and it's scenic lighthouse.  We veered off just before HH and took a small road west to Treardur  Bay so we could drive the coastal road up to South Stack (lighthouse). Definitely coastal, with no trees and strong constant winds. The sparsely placed houses were white and sturdy and even the sheep seemed to have hunched themselves against the protective hedgerows.

Back south on the highway to Plas Newydd, seat of the Marquess of Anglesey. Fancy country home, built in the 1700's but lastly decorated in the early 1900's so it portrayed quite a warm liveable atmosphere.

(Last Marquess had a habit of shuffling his feet; did more damage to the carpet than 1000's of visitors since 1976!)

          (World's longest village name!)

           (Another view of Beddgelert)

(Original 12th C.? house of the Gelert legend. Prince comes home to find baby missing, pet dog covered in blood. Slays dog only to find son alive and dead wolf nearby. Devastated to learn loyal Gelert saved his son the Prince never smiled again and raised memorial to dog. No, not this one. That one >)
